My computer no longer hibernates.
It attempts to go into hibernation - 'prepering to hibernate' - but then goes back to the screen it was on before I attempted hibernation.
Hibernation is activeated.
I do not have any error message.
Also unlike most others I can put it in stanby with no problems.

What can I do?

Re: xp hibernation problem

Maybe you should try this:
START – RUN – type “msconfig”
Then select “STARTUP”
From here, one-by-one, check out which application may cause this problem ..

Check the hard disk free space to hibernate (normally it needs 2,039MB)

here you can find some tips on How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP

I've got more than 500GB free space

I went through all applications, disabled all and still the same problem: it goes into preparing hibernation screen and comes back after 1s as if nothing happened

Re: xp hibernation problem

Maybe one of the recent xp updates caused that problem ..
Save you docs, pics, photos and whatever you may need, format HD and re-install XP and all the rest from scratches ..

Re: xp hibernation problem

I'm in trouble, trying to rectify the hibernation problem I downloaded something stupid and now windows defender pops up on the screen ad tells me that my comp is infected by a virus and I can't open any .exe file

xp hibernation problem

Some virus are really nasty and may not let you even install anti-virus program.

If you have any free machine, I suggest to hook your infected drive to it and run full virus scan.

Re: xp hibernation problem

you may try online virus scan with Bitdefender (or any trust scan engine)
