microcontrol ignition circuit

hi all, i'd like to find out more about this and would appreciate any help. the ignition (rpm) signal is at 12v and is a square wave signal.

what would be the best way to interface this signal to a microcontroller? do i have to use a comparator or adc or some other way?

thanks for any help.

ignition signal conditioning

one good option is an optocoupler that no only isolates ignition circuit but also is an easy way of stepping down 12V levels to what is suitable for your microcontroller [open-collector or logic output] ..

microcontroller and ignition

alright, sounds good and thanks. but what about after that?

how will i be able to count the pulse? will it go thru a comparator or analog to digital converter or something else for signal conditioning?

thanks again.

microcontroller for ignition

If the signal looks like a square wave when it passes through the optocoupler it will also look like a square wave ..
You can connect it directly to microcontroller's interrupt pin (see attached picture) and just count transitions over 1sec or 1min ..
