Hello everyone!!

I ve planned to implement mp3 decoder in fpga. Is it possible to implement it in virtex board? My intention is actually to implement it in fpga and decode it and play it in real time. Please gimme ur feedbacks on dis project(esp. its drawbacks, its feasibility, time duration to complete it n also the types of problems i might encounter). Pl reply asap. Thanks in advance!!

The only drawback of having an hardware mp3 decoder is the time taken to design/implement it. Otherwise its a good idea, as it can save a lot of power, and can be very efficient as compared to a s/w decoder. I think it can take up to 6 months for an experienced engineer to do the job.
The main challange is evaluating x^4/3 in hardware, the imdct and the synthesis sub-band filter.
You will also need rams/roms along with your FPGA for the decoder.
Kr,
Avi
