microcontroller based water level indicator

Hi
Is any-one have a micro-controller based water level indicator wich can display water level in 100 levels on LCD.

Thanks

water level indicator project

A micro-controller can't see a water level, so what kind of sensor do you imagine?

sensor can be simply made by casecading two transistors,u can increase its sensitivity by increasing base resistance,

Go to www.qprox.com - they sell capacitive sensors (QT300). You can simply put an insulated PCB and you can measure the levels.

well as a sensor transistors ca be used...

A simple float switch is great if you just want a single level, but as you need to know lots of different levels, you must take a different approach.

Possibly modify a car petrol tank sender, either resistive or capacitive

Bouncing ultrasonics of the liquid surface and measuring the reflected time. May be able to modify an ultrasonic tape measure to do this.

Use a laser, same idea, but much more difficult.

There are commercial sensors, but they are probably not cheap. Possible use hall effect IC and sense the distance of a magnet on a float?

Personally I would investigate the ultrasonic method, it seems the best approach. Either way the output would be analogue and you would need a micro with suitable inputs. Of course you would need to do a bit of maths to scale the output, if you wanted to show capacity in gallons etc. Depends a lot on the shape of the tank.

Hydrostatic pressure is mostly used for continuous level measurement of liquids, for a wide range of industrial applications up to domestique water tanks.

Ultrasonic is too inaccurate for many applications, also temperature dependant, and furthermore absolutely unsuitable if the tank atmosphere contains a considerable amount of vapours or has a variable gas concentration.

Laser has been very expensive in the past, but now portable DIY laser meters with a few mm accuracy are approaching the $100 region, so laser distance measurement may be available as inexpensive automation sensor soon.

Dear All,
Thanks for your suggetions!
Here I want to tell you that I have developed this by using a sensor (self made)which varries resistance according to tank level but this is not so accurate, difficult to install on the tank, difficult to align and weather effective. I want to use a sonsor which could be install in main outlet of tank or in kitchen/washroom etc. This kind of sensor should be pressure based which gives minor pressure change readings.
There are many sensors available in market but all are so costly. I need to have some cheap & best which could be fit to my requirement.

Thanks

microcontroller based pressure measurement

HI

Look at freescale site on application note for pressure sensor - they have some application on how to measure liquid level using pressure sensors

Pressure sensor can be ordered from mouser site

All the best

microcontroller based level measurement

Yeah, use freescale's MPX5050 with maximum pressure up to 50KPa that means you can measure water level up to 5 meter. or you can use MPX5010 if the tank height is only 1 meter. The price is not so expensive, the even give free sample is your project is a student project.

I had assumed you wanted a low cost solution, hence the suggestions. I absolutely agree that if you can afford it, pressure sensors are the way forward. I have had reasonable success in the distant past with ultrasonics. I do agree that temperature does affect results, but can be compensated for, depends on accuracy needed. Only ok for not corrosive enviroment though. Good luck with your project.

diy liquid level gauge

One common way to detect liquid level is used in Petrol tanks for automobiles...It has an arm simply coupled with a POT...Make a half-bridge (divider) and A to D it read microcontroller...

Dear all,

I am not electrical engineer. I am a civil engineer and working on a project related to runoff measurements after rainfall. I have a flume and what I would like to do is measure runoff depth at any point I want, after artificial rain. Runoff depth may be 3 mm or up to 100 mm, therefore I need a laser sensor to measure this low depth. As I said, I dont know any electonics knowledge so I'm thinking of buying that laser. Which product could you prefer me to use this low range runoff depth?
Best regards,

You can use an ultrasonic-type of level meter. Its main technology uses sound waves that bounces back to a transducer from a measured surface (either solid or liquid surfaces). These devices have a lot of out interface options that can be connected into a micro controller. The device can come also with an LCD or 7-segment monitor measured height.

Output interface:
a. Analog levels = 0 - 5V / 0 - 40mA
b. Serial: R232 / RS485
c. Relay 1 to 4 220 V / 2A relay output
d. Switch: Can also be used for solid state relays or digital control of two modes

Measuring range: Usually from 0-10, 15, 20, 30 or 50 meters

Power Supply: AC220V, DC12V or DC24V

Regards

hye..
can i know what is the suitable ultrasonic type water level for use in my final year project. it used to sense level of water inside car tank.
thanks for helping
