What's the use of breakpoint in MPLAB?

i'm using mplab version 8.10.00.00 at the moment. what is actually the use of breakpoint?
 

breakpoint

A breakpoint will pause program execution at that point. You can then examine / modify variables and registers when debugging or simulating.
