hello
what is smart antenna and why it is so popular

smart antenna is basically combination of a arry of antennas + DSP processor
A dsp algorithm decides the direction of beam.
Its popular because of its use in coming 4G technology

Smart antenna is a structure which can adapt itself according to situation. normally, for steerable applications like- phased array antenna or beam scanning for satellite communication it is used. now-a-days either by DSP method or by artificial neural network technology, it can be trained with proper inputs.

A simple example of a smart antenna system would be to implement a switch diversity scheme: Use two antennas and let the receiver choose the antenna which receives the strongest signal. This is possible in well behaved channels where at certain spatial points the signal is uncorrelated. The average SNR then increases compared to a single antenna system and with this additional SNR you could now increase the data rate or extend the range between the RX and the TX. The smartness is not really in the antenna, but in the receiver.

hi
the smart antenna is a kind of antennas that its pattern can scan the space.
this antenna is used in mobile station for example.
this antenna is made from dipole array or microstrip array.

Now-days for designing planar circuit as less space as possbleis on high demand. like in Rf-ID ckts which is so popular in corporate sectors and fo GPS receivers the should be handy with much more flexibility, ther comes the smart antenna.

Well, the motivation for smart antennas is not the size. Actually implementing some smart antenna technology requires more space as you'll need at least two or more antennas. (A single element dual polarized antenna exploiting polarization diversity is "could" be an expection.)

The motivation for smart antennas is the need for higher capacity. By higher capacity we mean more users in a certain area and/or higher data transmissionand and/or more range.

I'd say a smart antenna system either make use of spatial diversity or beamforming. Most interesting has been MIMO systems which exploit some smart antenna system at both link ends, which then leads to spatial multiplexing.

the smart antenna is a system of array antenna and other control component, it is so popular is that it can improve the performance of the wireless system

which one is the smart the antenna or the system......

I'd say the smartness is in the system as a whole. The combination of multiple antennas with the receiver is smarter than conventional systems. Maybe the guy who came up with this idea first could be considered as smart :)

Does anyone have a MATLAB simulation code with an RLS or LMS filter dor a smart antenna. ?

Thank YOu

A smart antenna system can automatically adapt its radiation pattern according to the environment using digital signal processing techniques. as opposed to normal antenna (omni-directional) that radiates its beam 360 degrees for transmission and reception, smart antenna beams to the angle of it's corresponding receiver/transmitter only.
what makes it smart is that the antenna system can estimate the direction that it has to beam according to the environment ( interference etc)

2 most common types of smart antenna:

• switched beam—a number of fixed antenna with predefined patterns. during transmission/reception, antenna is switched on according to the direction of the intended receiver/transmitter.

• adaptive array—an infinite number of patterns (scenario-based) that are adjusted in real time. Radiation pattern is determined by a DSP algorithm based on the direction of the intended receiver/transmitter and the direction of interference.
