you can use from bulk switched regulator.also you can use from two capacitance and a resistor, but this method is dangerouse and i do not recommend it.
Converting 220VAC directly to 5VDC is very dangerous...but still if you wanna go through the risk...then just purchase a Bridge Rectifier IC, connect it to the AC source...this will provide you with 220VDC...then to decrease this 220V to 5V you may use 7805 Regulator IC, but i doubt this IC would sustain so much high input voltage...so you may make a series of 78XX IC's to get final 5V.
yup...thats my point that you can't convert to 5 V directly...thats why i mentioned that there has to be a series chaing of difference 78XX ics...

The capacitor solution will work, but I would be careful about using it if you are inexperienced.
Infact all of these designs are NON ISOLATED, and if you don't know what your doing you will get electrocuted, the circuit will be live. You should at least run all designs with an isolation transformer.
If you still think the component count is too high on some of these switcher designs perhaps this is a sign of inexperience, in which case I would really recommend the use of a standard step down transformer / linear regulator type solution.
in my project i was asked to design a hidden bug in a three way adapter {square block that plugs into the wall with three sockets}
it has three cavities inside can be used
so i used one for power one for TX and one for coil antenna
range was greater than 5 miles at 170mhz FM
and i displaced about 1watt from the tx board to the coil antenna this was also connected to the earth via a capacitor to give a bit more radiation
anyway i powered it using a 10meg resistor to a bridge rectifier
made from cropped 1n4007
then a 470uf cap
then another 150K resistor and finaly to a 5v regulator
and another 100uf cap also some suppression 10nf dipped type ceramic caps
you MUST connect a load to it to check your work as you go
so i simulated a load with a couple of 1k resistors in series
on the output of the regulator
and im sure i remember the right values here however it depends on the load
for 1watt i need about 500ma so the 78L05 was a little hot so i glued it to the earth also to draw the heat down the pin as there is quite a bit of metal
then a blob of transfer paste on it and also made a small dot of it before i ran the glue round {super glue} to give better thermal connection
however it still runs if i plug it in and yes i can hear it from atleast
the other side of the river 2miles or so in concrete
a nice trick needs no power other than someone uses it
and perfect disguise
Like all previous posts i want to start with warning you for the hazards of a powersupply like this .
Death is rather permanent and if your lucky it can still hurt like hell .
Most simple would be a simple smps .
Rectify ,bulk condensator (+bias supply for the controller) Uout = Vin / duty cycle . + output capacitor .
But let me add this - mistakes = explosions !!!!!
