i think the essence of the analysis of signals and systems in time is convolution. isn't it?
 

Take care, remember that this kind of mathematical tools are for LTI systems. I guess that you are talking about hand analysis (LTI approximation, etc), because in real applications you deal with numerical methods to solve problems in the time domine, just think in a simulator, eldo, hspice...for example.
