Not much difference. NPN is just a counter part of PNP. PNP is triggered with a negative signal while NPN is triggered with a positive signal That is why there is a class B amplifier which is more efficient that class A because it uses the signal itself to turn on the transistor and amplify the signal. If you are going to use it as a switch, you must have a negative signal to the base of a PNP transistor in order to turn it on while a Positive signal to the base of a NPN transistor so that it will turn on. Hope this one help you not confuse you.
