How does an encoder work?

Hi All

I have an encoder with several wires. On the encoder there is a diagram which is showing different pulse shapes with difference of angle. My question is where we use these different signals and how

Hi ibrar. well first two of them are for power supply the encoder; generally black for negative and red for positive in the range of 5 to 12 VDC. The others lines vary from manufacturer and type of encoder but may be two (A signal and A complementary) or four (A and B and A complementary and B complementary).
The meanning of these signals are the A signal is the reference and the B signal is 90 degree delayed from A signal. These delay is for clockwise or counterclockwise direction detect, if the A signal is 90 degrees ahead to B then the direction is clockwise ; but if B signal is ahead then counterclockwise direction is present.
