patch antenna bandwidth

How can I improve the bandwidth for a square patch antenna? Will it help if I use a perforated ground plane (etched hole) instead of a solid ground plane?

Resonant freq is at 2.45GHz, permittivity at 2.45.

project patch antenna u slot

Dear neocw, it would be very helpful if you could send the design even as a jpeg. I suppose that you are talking about a normal microstrip antenna? There are numerous techniques in order to increase you bandwidth.I would be happy to assist.!

improve patch antenna bandwidth

I have the same question. How to enhance bandwidth of a simple patch antenna???You asked for the dimensions.I send you an attachement which has the simple antenna in it.Please send a reply!

thank you very much for your help!

bandwidth of patch antenna

I have some experinece on bandwidth enhancement of microstrip fed patches. One way to incereace bandwidth is by adding paracitic patches on the left and the right of the patch! Please find a paper attached. This paper refers to a PIFA antenna but the idea is the same.Sorry but i couldn't find something more close to microstrip bandwidth enhancement.
Another way that i have personaly used for a patch antenna is the one shown in paper "harmonic control of a square microstrip antenna operated at the 1.8 Ghz band". There you can see in figure 1 that the microstrip feed is "inserted" into the patch.Try to make it like that and you will definately get better impedance matching thus your bandwidth will broaden. Let me conclude with a more exotic solution that is presented to paper with Frequency Selective Surfaces...you will see that by addind a pattern of parasitic patches around the patch you get very nice results.
Hope I helped

antenna bandwidth

Hi neocw,

depending on how much bandwidth you require. Maybe a simple way is to cut a slot right in the midde of the patch.

Look at:

design of a patch to enhanced bandwidth using ads

Hi neocw,
To improve bandwidth of the antenna you can put an air layer of some thickness between substrate and ground plane. Also like it was said, you can cut the slot in the patch. I think, the most popular shapes of the slot are U shaped slot and L shaped slot. I have seen also two very narrow slots cut near two opposite edges of the rectangular patch. There are ways of cutting some inset slots, which makes some of current lines longer by changing shape of the patch. This gives some bandwidth too. Cutting slots in the ground plane should also give some bandwidth.

These are just examples what you can do there are more ways of improving the bandwidth. Everything depends on your project restrictions, like dimensions, possible feeding, substrates, required polarisation and so on..

I hope I could help,
Redi.

increase bw of patch antenna

i have a different way (new) to increase Bw of microstrip antenna. (for any shapes) But, it's still under investigation. Once i publish the paper, i'll let everyone know. hehe..

increase bandwidth microstrip antenna

Hey,
Like Redi said, reducing the Er of the substrate is one of the easiest ways of increasing the bandwidth of a patch antenna.
Another way is to have a parasitic patch on top of the antenna if possible (I've used this technique with good results).

the best idea to increase bandwitch

Thick substrate with low Er(air) an then capacitive probes as already mentioned.

Dear Vanqee,

Can u upload the "BW enlargement.rar" once again ?

Thanks!

bandwidth increase (microstrip antenna)

Hi There,

With the permittivity value at 2.45, you dont really have much room to move lower, I suggest you use a thicker substrate. You are probably using 1.6mm, use 2mm +.
Another way suggested above is also to dope the substrate with at least 2 radiating elements. You could increase performance by up to 60% and also reduce the size of the patch. There is no easy way out but I hope this helps. Talk to the substrate manufacturer for suggestions.

Ciao....

Added after 9 minutes:

A few clarifications. Performance is increased to 10% to 20% not 60%.
Patch size decreased by 50% to 60%.
The substrate needs to be doped with 2 Resonant and not radiating elements. To the left and right of the patch but beneath it in a stacked manner.

pifa antenna bandwith

dear

to increase the bandwidth the best solution is to use either slots or L probe feed at lowest permitivity.

how is the calculation of the parasitic patches?

thanks,

why slot on patch can increase the bandwidth

SIMPLE SOLUTION
impedance bandwidth of patch antenna can be increased by simply increasing the spacing between the patch and the ground plane

check this link for better understanding on increasing impedance bandwidth

increasing bandwidth for patch antennas

I agree with the previous posts:

Increase the height of the patch, or use a multilayer structures.

Good luck

how to increase bandwidth of patched atenna

Please help I need to increase the bandwidth of patch at 2.4GHz from my current BW of 70MHz to about 150-200MHz.

I am trying U-Slot but I dont know how to size the slot where to place it on the patch, please help

how to increase bandwidth size

Slots have a length of lamda/2, i guess that you have built your patch on a dielectric substrate so it has to be lamdag/2. I think that the slot has to be pleced at th area where you have maximum currents and with such orientation so as the current to be perpendicular to your slot(it depends on your structure so do a current plot before and decide, maybe in the middle of your patch).Use these as initial steps and try to optimise them.

how to increase antenna bandwidth

i think using any optimizer like genetic algorithm, the bandwidth increase from 5% up to 80%
i see that in paper

increase bandwidth project

what is your permittivity? is it fixed?

what are your antenna dimensions (patch and substrate)? are there any constraints on the antenna size?

the easiest way to increase the bandwidth is to increase the antenna thickness. do you have any constraints on that?

in my opinion, patch is already the best shape for a high BW antenna.

how do you feed the antenna? coaxial probe or transmission line feeding give not very good BW. the best feeding for high BW is aperture (electromagnetically) coupled transmission line from underneath the substrate. i think pozar had a paper about this, take a look...
