Explanation of stepper motor operation

I read, in stepper motor the power is given to the poles one by one. when the power is in one pole of the stator, the rotor is attracted to it and alligns with its teeth. My doubt is, since the rotor is fixed to a shaft and could be able to move only in a circular way, how could it move upwards or sidewards to get alligned with stator teeth?[/GVideo]
