What kind of signal is noise: power or energy?

Periodic signals and random signals (or noise) are not
energy signals because they have infinite energy.

noise it is not a finite signal and also it is non-zero always and how do you say it is energy signal????? what artil23 said is right.... random signals and periodic signals are power signals...

any mathamatical expression avilable in any book? regarding this?

noise is purely random and i dont think there is a mathematical expression for it..... there is equation for the spectral distribution of noise....

noise has infinite bandwidth? how we can at mathematical expression for spectra?

it can be done in the way of their relative amplitude at various frequencies..... haven't you heard of noise being described like gaussian noise etc.... it is due to this only.... gaussian distribution extends till infinity.....
i remember seeing some equations in art of electronics but i'm not sure coz i dont stick to one book for reading.....

i think power spectral density is the power of a signal at different frequencies... just because a signal has psd it doesn't mean that the signal is a power signal.....

i'm not that well versed in this topic but just know a what is what outlook.... i dont remember having heard anything called energy spectral density.....
 

Noise

Noise could be treated as voltage/current or power,
e.g. voltage V/SQRT(Hz) or Power in V^2/Hz.
Noise is totally random

look in e.g. Razavi's book of integrated circuits

For closure you first need to know what you mean as noise.

Is it constant spectral density commonly caused Johnson noise?

Is it your neighbor's child doing introductory trumpet lessons outside during hours that most people are trying to sleep?

Is it impulse noise that makes pixels on your television have the wrong colour and intensity?

Generally noise is defined as the first item and interference as the next two. The police may have other terms for what you do to your neighbor's child to make it stop.

E = ∫|x|²dt. (between -∞ and +∞)
here x = noise. it has a non-zero amplitude to ∞ freqencies. so E = ∞ according the above formula.

P = (1/2T)∫|x|²dt.(Lt T-> ∞).
the above equation gives a finite value.

thus, noise is a power signal.

An extraneous signal in an electrical circuit, capable of interfering with the desired signal. Loosely, any disturbance tending to interfere with the normal operation of a device or system. Classes of noise include burst or popcorn noise, intermediate frequency noise at low audio frequencies, white (thermal) noise, etc. Signals from power supply or ground line coupled into an amplifier output may be considered noise.

Hi All...

I beleive NOISE is a characteristion of what is not quite measurable. Only because of this we donot have a method to measere it's instantanious value, of what we cannot measue instantaniously we take recourse to statistical tools. Statistical methods on the other hand give only average/rms values. So this puts NOISE under 'Wave Category'. Finally the entire discussion boils down to mean that noise is a power signal.

I may be wrong also some body may kindly reply if so...!!!1
