atm and magnetized cards and smart cards

please i need a very good comparison and contrast between the ATM CARD and a SMART CARD.

magnetized cards, smart cards, atm cards

An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) card is a specific application for a data card. Most ATM's use a magnetic stripe card that satisfies the ISO7810 standard. A Smart Card also can be used as an ATM card with the appropriate interface hardware.

A Smart Card is a specific type of card. There is an imbedded chip in the card that contains data and/or a processor. The card can interactively work with the interface machine to store, process, and exchange information. For example, a Smart Card can have a monetary balance downloaded to the card which can then be used like cash for transportation, event admission, etc. A Smart Card can be reconfigured for different uses through the interface machine.

similarities between smart card and credit card

In some countries, ATM or credit card may be cards that have both IC and magnetic stripe. For this kind of cards, it is still a smart card.

Smart cards could be categorized into memory card and microprocessor card. ATM or credit cards should be the latter.

See the website of Smartcard Alliance for some infos.

thanks for your contribution. please, talking about ATM can it be reprogrammed. if yes can i get a do it yourself circuit diagram to reprogram the card. pls include that of a smart card if u can. thanks

Elektor Magazine had an article on a Smart Card reader in November 2006. You can see more about it at: **broken link removed**

Just do a search on Google with "smart card reader" and you'll find information about commercial readers that connect to a PC. The Elector article above was probably the best do-it-yourself information published recently.

Another magazine had an article on how to build a magnetic card reader. You can see more about it at: **broken link removed**. Writing to a mangnetic card requires a bit more equipment and sophistication. You can see some equipment that can do the job at: https://hackershomepage.com/section6.htm
