Power dissipated in resistor = Voltage drop across resistor X current flow
Make sure the power dissipated never exceed the power rating of resistor.
Power rating of resistor is based on the size of resistor. Exp the rated power of 0603 resistor is 0.1W.

Manufacturer's data sheets give the maximum power rating at a given temperature, usually 25 degC or 70 degC. They also give a temperature derating characteristic. Resistor power ratings derate linearly from the full rating at a specified temperature to 0 at a higher temperature (tyically 150 deg C).
