Hi,
Did enyone used RJ45 connector in automotive environment? I want to transport power supply and CAN over UTP cable between various devices. What are the pros and cons for using RJ45 in automotive?
Thanks.

Hi

UTP is a weakly protected cable, and the connector is also weak for a moving environment, I wouldnt do that for important circuitry.

Hi,

In my work we used rj45 connectors in automotive but you have to make some protections against EMI and ESD.Up to now we faced no problem...

These connectors are made for industrial RJ-45 applications:

I haven't used them myself, though.

pisoiu,
It depends on what part of the automobile you are talking about. The RJ45 connector was not designed for a high vibration environment such as under the hood. Also, the connectors are very vulnerable to contamination from salt spray, road crud, etc.

Hi,
In most cases, the device is installed inside trucks, near the fuse panel and other ECUs. It is basically a datalogger for FMS bus, and it is not exposed to outside elements.
