Hi, I am trying to use the planar EM simulator in Designer v2.2. I am trying to use a blackbox (N-port) in my planar EM layout. However, when I create a blackbox, it places a schematic symbol onto the layout window. How do I connect it to my structure? Thank you.

Use the "Edit/Select Edges" tool to select the edge of your planar EM structure where you wish to attach your N-port "blackbox." Then use the "Edit/Select" tool to select the port (the diamond shape on the symbol) of the N-port "blackbox" where you wish to connect your planar EM structure. Now, with both the planar EM edge and N-port port selected, use the "Draw/Connection" command (or Ctrl-W) to make the electrical connection.

Note that the Draw/Connection command is unavailable until you have 2 connectable items selected... Also, the 3 commands described above are available through the toolbar palettes as well as the menus.

Cheers,
eckypting

Thanks alot, I can now connect the schematic box to my planar EM edges. I have not had the chance to simulate the entire structure yet, but will let you know when I do. How did you figure this out? Is there a tutorial or help file?

I ran the simulation with my blackbox data (which was obtained from measurements of a lumped capacitor). However, once I use the blackbox, my S-Parameter become greater than one at a certain frequency range. What can be wrong or how can I find out what is wrong?

Thank you.

Be sure that your ports terminated at a 50 ohm resistance. mag[s21]>1 can occur when the port is terminated with the complex impedance of a black box. Otherwise, check the header and data in your s2p file for consistency (i.e. header & data are both MA or RI or dB/ang or whatever...). AppCAD, freeware from Agilent can import and view s2p data files...
