patch antenna design software

Does anyone know of a software freely available on the net to design P.A.T.C.H antennas. I am looking for a software that would give me the P.A.T.C.H antenna dimensions and feed point locations for a specified center frequency and substrate thickness and dielectric constant.

thanks

microstrip patch antenna design software

Hi there
Such programs are very expensive and are not availble for free. But if you are a student you can require a trial verion. I would most defenetily recommend IE3D, which you can require from:
www.zeland.com
Ansoft have also developed usable programs. It should be mentioned that you have to use some time to get aquinted with these sort of programs.
But in a way I think you got it backwards...There are some very good formulas in numerous of antenna books to calculate the dimension of the patch, and the location of the feed. It also depend on what kind of feed you like to implement. Theantenna design handbook by Balanis is one of them, and Bharthia have write a very good handbook about m.i.c.r.o.s.t.r.i.p antennas.
If u dont know the dielectrc constant of the materila, do asearch on google and u will find it. And as mentioned the formulas can be found in different antenna books.
If you then like a program that calculate the dimensoins based on frequency and so on, make it yourself using for example Matlab. Used the formulas and implement them in Matlab.I have done that myself for a circular polarized m.i.c.r.o.s.t.r.i.p antenna.
Please let me know if there is any problems.

Best Regards
Bruno

copper patch antenna

Hi Bruno ,

Could you let me know the reference you used for the design. I am trying to include the effect of copper loss in the patch antenna and thats why it is getting difficult to find a design procedure. I have looked at the books you mentioned. But there seems to be no straight forward procedure to account for the copper loss on the desin process.

thanks

pcaad free download

I rememeber there is good ref in book CAD of ustip antennas for wirelss applications. There is a disk included.

sir element7k : can you tell us the name of the book , and can we download it anywhere ?

mstrip40 download

ie3d and ansoft have different advances in designing patch antennas ,i think u should first
decide what kind of feed you choose, and then choose the sofeware.hope helps.

I`ve just uploaded the book without software. See u.

patch antenna design software free

Hi abhishek
Well if U like to include the copper losses I can see you have a lot of work...I actually neglected the cobber loss, but I must say that the measured results for the antenna were vey closed to the calculated ones. The loss due to mutual effect was though very important. I have encountered problems with cobber losses in RF circuts. Here ADS was used to get as good result as possible. Regarding the reference for the antenna, what do U mean?
I was supposed to design a patch antenna operating at 2.4 GHz wich should recieve as good as possible at all direction. The choice fell on a circular polarized micrstrip antenna with to feeds. I designed the required power divider to, all in cobber. We used a test model usiong FR4 substrate, which is not the best substrate of choice (but extremly cheap). Here I include most losse, specially then because of mutula effects ( here Balanis and Bharhias bookes are very good). i found differnet formulas for losses in different books. I then implmnetred those in Matlab as a function of frequency an dielectric constant.s, and then ogt the lenghts of the patch antenna, and the gain ( tajking lthose losses into account). If there is something more specific u like to know then tell me.
Best Regards Bruno

software to design patch antenna

Ansoft Designer 2.1 SV (student version) is your best bet. The new release now includes the EM simulator (formerly known as Ensemble) and is available for free.

Other low cost options (<$500) include:

[1] Sonnet em Lite (impedance response, but no radiation pattern) or,

[2] Artech House version of WiPL-D (3D MoM), or

[3] PCAAD also have closed form solutions for basic patch designs based on the well-known transmission-line, cavity and Carver models of probe-fed, edge-fed and aperture fed rectangular or circular single-layer microstrip patches.
