help of motion detection + speed measurement

hi,
i want to build a low cost low power detector to detect the speed of a object.
object can be at most half a meter away from the detector. and maximum speed of the object is 20 m/sec.
Any suggestion which sensor should i use and which mcu will be best?

Use microwave sensor the best solution there are module who work on 24.150 GHZ who will do the work

Not sure it's low cost

The simplest/cheapest solution I can think of would be a simple
beam-break timer. Use two phototransistors a set distance apart,
with light sources (LED's, laser pointers, the sun, etc) illuminating
them. When the first light beam is broken, your timer starts. The
timer stops when the second beam is broken. From there it's only
a matter of some simple maths to figure out speed.

Do a web search on the topic of "pinewood derby" timers, and you
should find lots of examples.

thank you all for help.
actually ihave good experience of PIC and ARM based microcontroller its that motion sensing which i have no idea. i am looking for something that is only on one side of moving object. something like radar but ofcourse not that expensive. i have tried google but did not come up with some useful solution.

Dear abdul salam, i suggest to use two ultrasonic sensors (sender & receiver),
you can send a certain signal of relativly high freq generated by your PIC for one second or any another specified time, send it through the TX then the RX will receive the reflected signal.
and you can calculate the speed simply.
This idea will work if the meter is behind the moving body.
