Yes. Select the Highlight Icon. Then in the right tool options field select a color. Then you will have to select a net. The net will be permanently highlighted until you decide to dehighligt the nets. Thus you can go through all nets and assign different colors to them. Traces will be candy-striped, but shapes (planes) will be solid colored which can fool you since the highlight color overrides the color which you have chosen in the color setup panel.
I think it's just as visible as Pads - the color saturation and brightness is slghtly subdued, I think the problem is it has a limited color selection with several colors very similar to other hues, if you view a negative plane with a net that has been highlighted it will not display correctly - no thermals and clearances disappear.
