Is WiMAX vaporware????

I am a college student and am wanting to learn about the technical side of this WiMAX technology. I mainly want to get hands on support...

Is there any dev boards, or even actual products on the market for sale that utilize this technology?

Anyone have expirence with WiMAX products?

thanks
Lee

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

802.16 will eventually displace 802.11 but it will take time. The two driving forces are increased usage of the limited spectrum (3x more data throughput) and low power device operation by using just a few subcarriers.

Is WiMAX vaporware????

Can I get dev boards or devices that utilize 802.16, right now?

thanks
Lee

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

There are several companies that claim that they are moments away from sample hardware but we have all heard that one before.

I would not risk your graduation project on getting one of these sample boards in time.

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

Last week this company came to our company to present their product, they say the first 802.16 WiMAX devices will be ready for 2006... I'm not really sure about it, it didn't quiet stick to me their product... The company name was AirSpan.

They are also co founders of the WiMAX forum, so i guess they know what they are talking about when they sell their WiMAX products.

The WiMAX line product is called AS.MAX, you can check it out at their homepage:

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

Now this 802.16 is still under development by many companies, I can say that it is similar to WLAN 802.11 but the actual difference comes is, it is used for very far distances around 50 miles coverage area, the access point(wlan) in WIMAX would be dealing with satelite kind(or else u can say as a mobile access point) in between some centre for different areas,
The other difference would be the payload, Network formation etc.

thanx

Check Intracom S.A. Greece

They have developed a WiMAX chip which, I think they already use it some Rural Greece areas.

Is WiMAX vaporware????

It will be greatest for the Chinese since the cost will be low for us to spread IT to the rural areas, though the cost has to go down. I can design the transmitter portion (Any of the 4 Phy specification) if I can get $200,000 investment.

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

I have heard of a rural project in China but it is being done by a Western company.

Is WiMAX vaporware????

Re: Is WiMAX vaporware????

Is WiMAX vaporware????

I just read that Denmark's three biggest cities Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense will soon be completely covered with 4 Mbps WiMAX network so private users can get wirless broadband internet access all over the city. The WiMAX network will be made by this Danish company: http://www.dansketelecom.com/uk/index.htm
They report the prices will be able to compete with similar ADSL connections.
In the beginning the WiMAX access will require an external WiMAX box powerred from an AC outlet.
But Intel's next Centrion chipset generation in 2006-2007 will include WiMAX so the box isn't required anymore.

Copenhagen will be covered completely before the end of this year.

100 Danish cities already have some WiMAX connections, but so far it has only been for companies. Now they will cover complete cities for private subscribers. To begin with they will cover the three biggests cities.

Are there any other big cities covered by WiMAX yet?
Does there exsist an online list like the lists for Wi-Fi hotsposts?

Here's a couple of good rescoures for ViMAX:
