There are still more vendors on the market, and what is important is that they offer different level of support and different toolsets and of course different range of devices. Depending on the application you might want to use a very large and versatile FPGAs or relatively smaller and less complex. Another division line runs across prices and performance. yet another factor is availability.
There are more factors influencing the choice, but there is one common truth: No comapany has all the best features available for the FPGA technology.
Some companies offer very versatile chips, but they lack support, others offer extraordinary support while missing the right price, others have good development kits but prices are high, some offer nonvolatility while missing density issues.
One of the better combinations on the market is certainly with Xilinx and Altera, but Actel took a different aproach which for some is what they just needed. Other brands are Cypress, Lattice, Atmel, ..... .
Take a good look at every possible family and see what you need. Than make your choice. Othervise it is a sheer chance that you'll pick exactly what your older incarnation is looking for.
Regards, yego
