fractal antenna in hfss

Hi,
I wonder if you have simulated fractal antennas using HFSS. At the beginning I wanted to simulate some antennas described in articles, but unfortunately my result are different from those presented (which were simulated with another software). Therefore I had to switch to ie3d but it is very time and memory consuming tool. Have anyone came across this problem with HFSS?? Or maybe I am making some mistake in HFSS??
The attachement is my HFSS implementation of the antenna described in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, vol 52, no.10, October 2004 pp2571-2579 "Analysis of a Modified Sierpinski Gasket Monopole Antenna Printed on Dual Band Wireless Devices" by Tsachtsiris,Soras,Karaboikis,Makios. If you have came across the same problem or could take a look at the project I would be very gratefull. I can e-mail the article in pdf if anyone would like to compare the project.

Hi,

I think your main mistake (which is very common actually) is that in HFSS in case of Microstrip lines, the port size changes the results. So you must adjust the port size to get an input impedance of 50 ohms, which is actually not a very pleasant task. also you should check the convergence and increase the maximum number of passes in case of non converging solution with that number

However, I think that IE3D is much faster and less memory consuming than HFSS for planar structures as it uses the moment method which requires two dimensional mesh, as opposed to the 3 dimensional tetrahedral mesh in HFSS. I tried it in several fractal antennas and it was quite good, however in some cases I had to sacrifice some accuracy for speed, so I changed the default number of cells from 20 per wavelength to 15 and 10 in some times, also I disabled the edge cells and meshing optimization. As long as I just want to have a quick check and not asking for accurate results

Thanks, but regarding the size of the port - I thought (based on some HFSS tutorials) that it should fit the size of the actual microstrip line. Anyway, I tried ie3d but I found it even more time and memory consuming than HFSS, also I don't really know how to simulate an antenna perpendicular to the groundplane in ie3d. If you had some examples of antennas in ie3d/hfss could you send them to me?? Cause I feel that I am still in the same place and cannot find a way out. Probably I am making the same mistakes over and over again but there is nobody, who could tell me that I am doing sth wrong.

I am sorry, I thought you were talking about a planer fractal antenna, that is why I said you can uses IE3D.

But if you were talking about an antenna perpendicular on the ground plane (e.g. a sierpinski monopole), you are right; IE3D cannot be used in such case, and you have to use HFSS. One of my friends tried to simulate this antenna once and he spent 3 days in the siumlation, but it was fed by a coaxial cable not a microstrip line; so he had no problems.

I guess my post may have been misleading. There are two topics I am working on: first there are monopoles perpendicular to the groundplane - I guess I have to solve my HFSS problems and that is the only way to get some results, second: planar structrures, such as the one I mentioned, I guess ie3d will be the best choice.
And about the coax feed, I have been trying to get some reasonable results with feeding the monopole (perpendicular) with coax in hfss, but although I implemented the coax as it should be done (according to the manual) I got poor results. Can you say sth about this? Have you came across this problem??

If you have problems with hfss you can find something at this link. It's old Hfss but the idea haven't changed and it can be helpfully.

adel_ 48: you are quite right that HFSS is not fast and in my opinion slowest of all EM software.

Can somebody upload the corresponding paper so that one can have a look and compare the results. The abdoeng file does not have nay error but i think the results are not good especially return loss.

hi nqur3an,as snkhan said there is no error in abdoeng file,i run it before upload here ,it run without no error,i am not interested by hfss,i use cst microwave studio,if u have it i could help u more

abdoeng u r right in the sense that CST more handy toool as far as speed is concern but i think in the case of design like fractral or the any design that include lot of edges CST5 failed to converge (e.g. steady state criterion .....) and i have to use HFSS in that case

Mesh problem in HFSS

i have designed third iteration of fractal koch curve in HFSSv10 but on analysis it gives me following error:

[error]Mesh generation has failed. Specific details may be found in 3D Modeler>Model Analysis>Show Analysis Dialog> Last Simulation Mesh
[error]Simulation completed with execution error on server: Local Machine


There was an initial mesh error for iteration 2 in HFSSv9 but it was solved by using HFSSv10 and now there is no such error in iteration 1 and 2.

If anyone knows about this error please do help.
