What's the OD layer that I see on layout?

Hi,

What does the layer OD mean on layout? Always wanted to know its expansion and what it actually means. Thanks
 

Maybe if you said what technology / design kit / tool, you might
get more than a wild guess.
 

I think it means Opening for Diffusion, from the days when Implantation was not yet so common.

OD means diffusion layer in Layout. If OD layer is in Nwell then it becomes a PMOS device and if the OD layer is in Pwell then it becomes a NMOS device (it may be different based on PDK). Essentially OD defines the place where you can drop a contact to the well on which it is placed. For example if you open any fresh layout in cadence, the "black screen with dots" defines the psub and if you draw a OD layer enclosed in a pwell layer and put OD contacts then you have dropped contacts to psub through a p+.
