Hi all, does anyone know what is the common type of connector that can use in design for connecting main board to sub-board?
Mainly is for signal transmission like microcontroller to LCD screen or other IC.
 

A common method inside equipment that requires many connections is to use a ribbon cable with the appropriate press fit insulation displacement header plugs, along with two row header strips soldered to the PCB.

Hi, thanks for reply. do you mean FFC ? can you give me some example?
 

Here is a typical fairly wide ribbon cable:

These plug into header strips that you solder onto your circuit board.
 
Not enough information.
You didn't tell us anything about the application...

1. Does one board provide power to the other?
2. How many signals?
3. What's the speed of the signals?
4. Are the boards prone to vibration?
5. Are you going to connect / disconnect the boards often?
 
FFC does seem to be used more widely in mass produced products these days, but not sure its better or easier to use than old fashioned ribbon for one off hobby construction.

Either type is fairly fragile, and really only suitable for linking sub assemblies inside equipment.

1. there is a possibility to provide power to another board.
2. Max might go up to 20 or even more.
3. Not sure ( like controlling LCD display)
4. less likely
5. Yes. but i hope to have some locking mechanism if possible.

Actually i wish to commonize the connector for my board. It is easier for design and purchase but i not sure which one to use. Like i have a main board for PIC, i might use this one main board to work with different sub board.

As you said you are going to carry the power.. Better use shrouded cables & connectors in order to avoid any reverse connections. Also it is good to carry the power lines separately & not along with the signals..
