slices in vhdl synthesis

hi i am new in FPGA, i have synthesized my VHDL code, it said:

Number of Slices:..
Number of Slice Flip Flops:...
Number of 4 input LUTs:...

I want to know what are they, what are Slices? Where can I find the information?
Thanks a lot.

Re: VHDL synthesis

well ..i assume that you are using XILINX fpgas .Go to their web site and request a CDROM for that familiy that you are using .But in the mean time you could also download the data sheet for that component and architecture doc .

Re: VHDL synthesis

Hi panda,
FPGA r made of basic units called CLBs.
In Xilinx FPGAs, a CLB is broken into 4 slices and each slice into 2 LUTs (Look-Up-Table).
u can get a clear picture abt the FPGA architecture from the datasheets provided by xilinx site.

Re: VHDL synthesis

different xilinx versions vary with different slices,
suppose in xc400 series we have one CLB = one Slice,

Virtex we have one CLB =2 slices.

Virtex2 we have one CLB = 4 slices

VHDL synthesis

hi,
slices count will be different for different fpgas like
Virtex we have one CLB =2 slices.
Virtex2 we have one CLB = 4 slices

with regards,
kul.
