balun design

Dear All
Anyone have the experience to design a balun transformer to convert the differential port to single port?
Moreover, how to measure the diffential port impedance with 2 port network analyzer?

Best regards

balun designs

To do measurements you will need another balun to bring the impedance back dowo to your other port. You have two choices. The first is to use a laboratory quality one that is available from the anazyer manufacturer. The other is to use two. Put an attenuator between the balanced prorts. When you do the S12 and S21 measurements, subtract the attenuation and divide theresult by two to get the parameters of just one balun. The S11 and S22 measurements are correct as is. Of course, you need a good attenuator which you will have to be careful in designing and constructing and be at the impedance level of the balanced side.

balun transformer

Hi,

I've seen a good explanation about the subject in the 2002 ARRL
Handbook.

Bye. :) :)

Tornado,

Thanks for the good links.

designing baluns

Please check the ARRL publication:
Transmission Line Transfomers by Jerry Sevick W2FMI
ISBN 0-87259-046-1
I think it is at it's second printing (at least)

This is a very down to earth explanation how to design and measure Baluns and impedance transformers from 0.1 to 100 MHz

It's a MUST HAVE book! :D

Hi,

Your link does not exist. If you have the apnote upload it.
Thanks.

Bye.

baluns transformer

Hi,
Take note if another balun is adopted. Proper de-embedding is needed.

It exists, here it is.

Please look at:

There are a lot of publications (and benchmarks)
about i@e@3d. Among other there is an article:

wideband balun, how does it work

Terminate the primary in the design impedance. Then port 1 of network analyzer to one lead of secondary and port 2 to the other. Take the S-Parameter and put them in your favorite RF analyzer. Then terminate it with a floating termination. Its a snap in @DS. I'm sure other analyzers can handle this, too.

how do baluns work

:) Any ports network(a balun can be it) can be simulated!

Here is another article discussion on balun:

While designing balun, what are the parameters to meet requirement?
S21, S11?
