Polarisation of a microstrip patch antenna

Hi.,How to find out if a linearly polarised microstrip patch antenna is vertically polarised or horizontally polarised?

Vertical and horizontal are just labels given to differentiate between two orthogonal types of linear polarization.

It is up to define your axes in any problem. You could call a microstrip patch to be horizontally polarized when viewing from a top angle like this

However, rotate your viewing angle by 90 degrees, then you call it vertical polarization.

To give an analogy, it is like asking to differentiate between X and Y axis. It is completely up to you to pick one direction (for say X) and then the orthogonal (Y) will be in the other direction.
 
it's just a notation...

Usually this is how it is named as vertical or horizontal polarized....

If the antenna E-field is perpendicular to the ground, it is said vertical polarization...
if the antenna E-field is parallel to the ground, it is said horizontal polarization...

Since it's just a notation, you can choose what ever way as the horizontal or vertical... IF the antenna is rotated, polarization changes... just two names given to identify two common uses of polarization
