hfss plane wave

Hi all,

For the HFSS v9.2, can i simulate an ideal plane wave source?? how can i do tat??

I saw under HFSS>excitations>Incident wave.
But not sure how to correctly define, if i want the wave to propagate in the z direction and also i not onli want ONE wave to be defined.. I would like a strong source.

going to use it to design a convergent lens.

Cheers

Have you changed the solver to Eigenmode (Instead of Driven Modal) ?

plane wave simulation

Hi itai,

why issit so that i must set the Modal Type to: Eigen Mode???
then how do i define my excitations and boundaries now????

incident wave hfss

hi
there are lots of messages about solution types and assigning boundaries.
just check the forum, search and find!
best regards

hfss plane wave

Hi,

i mean i do know the basic procedures to do when using eigenmode.
However for my problem now, to simulate plane waves, is it realli necessary to go under "eigen mode"?

can i do it in driven modal mode for example, and still use the incident wave function? Becos i've found a note in the HFSS HELP that states: when in "eigen mode" some excitations mite not be able to be defined: wave port, lumped port, incident wave, current source, etc..

cheers

hfss incident wave

It just depends on the case you need your desing for.
So I guess for what you described, it is more appropriate to use driven model not eigen values. If you describe your problem more clearly, I guess I can help

exciting a plane wave in hfss

Hi george,

I want to simulate plane waves hitting on a piece of dielectric and find out how the E-Field will change when the wave enters the dielectric.

I also wish to investigate the penetration strength of the E-field in various dielectric constants.

Hence I need to know how to create a true plane wave. I've saw there is a function to assign plane wave, but i've tried to define plane waves according to the help, nothing came out( no wave).

thankz

hfss incident wave

Here is my simple guidline for you.

1. Select <Assign> --> <Plane Wave>
2. Select <Cartesian>.
For k Vector setup:
3. Set X=0, Y=0 and Z=-1 (for wave travalling toward the -ve Z-direction) or +1 (for vice versa).
For Eo Vector setup:
4. This is either X=1 or Y=1, not both, and Z must be 0. If your structure is symmetrical along both X and Y, then for X=1 or Y=1 will both give you the same result.
5. Finish.

define plane wave hfss

I totally agree with Sassyboy in those steps.
Now you can use the field option in your post processor to get the field values

hfss incident plane wave setup

Hi,

i found out tat there is a "edit source" option. so what is actually meant by "scattered fields" and "total fields"in layman's term? which one shld i select? to see how the E-field propagate?

hfss incident wave source location

Hi Guys,

My mistake :(

hi

did you solve this problem somehow? I'm working on this case and all the advice is good for me. If you would not have any sample project?

Hi guys!

I have the some problem, there is someone that can explain how we can excitate corretly the incident wave?

regadars,

hi

for example for a unite cell that you want simulated

first you should define PBG box for unit cell and then for incident wave excitation you must select the upper face of PBG box and assign boundary for it which is radiation and now again select it and assign excitation for it that is incident wave and go on with earlier explanation of duds here.

for lower face do this again

finally run it
