In school they have two camps the ones that follow Altera with the complex expensive solutions that can do anything when you can afford that or Microchip with the inexpensive solutions used everywhere. In between there are custom solutions using DSP's which do complex math in hardware often in cell phones, modems and audio processing. On a smaller scale there is programmable logic chips which replace the everyday discrete logic in low cost.
The Microchip PIC chips are most common and have a much wider usage due to the cost benefit ratio. But there are vast number of sites supporting all of these for projects you wish to learn how to do so you are not limited to digital or analog but can easily do mixed signal processing for millions of applications.
