One mobile charges says 5V, 700mA another charger says 5V, 800mA

HI friends..
I have one doubt in measuring the current value of a source..
One mobile charger says 5V, 700mA another make charger says 5V, 800mA.. So how is the current output measured.. If measured, it can be controlled.. So im planning to reduce the current value and charge the mobile.. Is that possible...?????

First, why do you want to reduce the current? What do you want to acheive?

The charger is really just a 5V power supply, not a real charger in itself. The charger circuit is built into the mobile.

Power supplies like that provide a voltage, it is the mobile that will try to draw whatever current it needs. The power supply does not really control the current, all it will do is (possibly) cut off if your mobile tries to draw more current than the power supply can safely provide. The mA rating on the power supply is the maximum that it can safely provide to a device.

So, all that matters then is that your 5V power supply can provide enough current for the mobile. To out how much that is, check what the mobile's manual says. Or, better, put an ammeter in line with the power lead to measure the current drawn when charging an empty battery. That might be erratic though depending on what the mobile is doing.
 
The 700mA on one charger means that it can offer a maximum of 700mA. The other charger can offer a maximum of 800mA. Since your phone originaly had the 700mA charger, you can switch it to the 800mA without a problem (because it will take, in the worst case scenario, a maximum of 700mA).

The other way around might damage your phone and charger.

Thank you. My question is how the maximum current circuit is obtained... If a 5 V charger can produce a maximum of 700mA current, then why the other charger produces only 500mA...:):)..

Can i tweak the 800mA power supply pin and charge the 700mA mobile... I was afraid whether the mobile will get burnt...:):)
 

You can plug the 800mA "charger" into the phone (it won't explode or anything), but, it will NOT reduce the current that the phone consumes.
 

The charger provide the power to charge the battery,usually a stable output of voltage(usually 5V). But the current can be changed by the circuit in the cellphone.That means the circuit inside will control the current!

In China (the standard is different in different country) , the max charging current is 1C ( for Li ),where C is the capacity of your battery.For example, a 1000mAh's battery, the max charging current can be 1000mA,When the charging current gradually drops to 0.01C ,We consider that the battery is full and we can stop charge or just charge in a small current

again, all the current is controled by the circuit inside!

1. The output of of charger is almost exactly 5V with very very little variation(ideally zero) at irresptive of any variation in its input voltage(usualy [raw]power supply 230V/120V) This is needed to support the circuit inside the charger.
2. 800mA current is the maximum current the charger can deliver without compromising its specified performance levels. Now, the mobile(which uses the charger) can take any current from 0mA to 800mA based on its requirement to charge the mobile.

Thanks krish7.. My question is how one can provide 700mA and other has 800mA.. Lets make it more simple and funny question.. By changing what component in the 700mA charger i can increase the chargers output current.
that is " I want to make my 5V,700mA charger into 5V,1A.. I need to increase the current output while the voltage must be the same..
 

That is not as simple as changing one component, or two, or three...

The whole charger is designed and components selected for the specified maximum output current.

You can often change the voltage of these PSU's a little. I often do to make a spare 5V PSU into a 6V, or 3.3V, I even have a potentiometer in one for variable voltage. But not the current.

This current rating is decided by the type of battery to be charged and its electrical characteristics. There must be two different types of batteries which uses these 700mA and 800mA rating chargers.

Until, we complete understand the circuit of 700mA charger, i believe it is NOT possible to change its output current. Mostly, it will be re-design of circuit of 700mA charger to get 1A out of it. It is NOT possible to get additional current keeping the 700mA charger as-is and adding any extra components to it.
