looking for distance sensor

I want to find a distance sensor but not using the IR sensor can any one help me in choosing a good sensor. I prefer digital sensor.

I don't want to use IR sensor because I am going to use an IR heater in front of it so I am afraid it would affect it's performance won't it???. I am sorry I was mistaken before the distance range suitable for me is 20cm to 30cm
 

I found digital IR sensor I think it will serve my application, ISL29021. The problem is I am not sure if the IR heaters that will be mounted beside it would affect it or not. The heaters wavelength is 2-10 micro meter. The other subject I am not sure of is whether this sensor will be suitable for range of 20cm to 40cm.

another issue I forgot to mention is both the heaters and the sensor should be enclosed in an tunnel shape enclosure, would that be problem for the sensor to read the reflected wave (since it's mounted inside a tunnel shape enclosure)??.

According to datasheet curves, it hardly can.

u can use Ping Ultrasonic senor from parallax
it is a simple ultrasonic sensor for measuring distance. i use it
 
I am also thinking of using max3806 with laser diode.
I fear, you're not aware of the complexity of laser distance measurement.

Actually you are right I am not, I need the sensor to be as simple as possible because it's a minor circuit in the project.
 

You didn't tell much about a distance measurement specification, particularly object properties and intended accuracy.

You should ask, if a simple IR distance "measurement", which is just a measurement of reflected light intensity is suitable for your purpose. It can work, if the object is large and has a clearly defined reflection coefficient. Otherwise, it can't tell more than presence or absence of an object, which I won't qualify as distance measurement.

this distance sensor will not measure the distance to a specific object but to different objects, I would say that a simple IR distance measurement would be fine but as I said my only concern is that this sensor will work near an IR heater(2-10 micros), so I am not sure if this will affect the readings in the sensor. For the accuracy I don't need high accuracy, +-0.5cm or 1cm will be fine. I don't need to find only the presence of the sensor, but I need to display also the distance on an LCD.
 

In first post You say that You dont whant to use IR.:shock:

The problem as I said is not with the IR sensor itself but I was worried that using IR heaters with the IR sensor would affect the sensor readings but after I read a little on the ranges I think it won't be a problem because the heaters range are 2-10 micro but the IR LED will be 850-950 nano.
 

go for ultrasonic sensor with trigger and Echo pins. you can easily get the output .
