I need a 5V and 1A supply for my portable device. I am thinking of using 5 * 1.2 V NiMH batteries.

Which regulator shall I use: Low voltage dropout or DC-DC converter ?

How is the efficiency of LDO ? Is it better than DC-DC converters?

Switching regulators benefit from having high power efficiency, between 80-95%, and by the other hand the efficiency for the LDO is limited by the quiescent current flow and the Input/Output voltages. LDOs are better suited for may applications than DC-DC converters because of lower cost, complexity and output noise.
