i want receive data in at89c51 through rs232 db9 cable... i heard that rs232 inverts the signals, that is, positive for logic 0 and negative for logic 1... should i use NOT gate after max 232 to get normal bits back ? please help.. thanks in advance..

nope, the max232 will do this for you, you will receive regular uart out of it.

No, if you read the datasheet for the MAX232 you will find that it "inverts" the signal.
