Hi everyone,
I am thinking about building a pedometer (I am mainly doing stepping... preparing for tramping trip...). The most obvious choice is accelerometer... But, it is likely be an overkill. Have you got any good suggestion that can be used as makeshift pedometer sensor... How about the commerical ones?

The commercial ones I know of all use the accelerometer. You can use a low cost one that has low accuracy but high sensitivity. You cannot use the ones that trigger air bags on cars because they are not sensitive.

I use OMRON HJ-105 pedometer. The company claim some 95% accuracy and also distinguishes between aerobic steps and regular daily walk, but by my experience they overestimate the accuracy of the thing even after carefull selection of the gain.

Friend

I have seen some design based on mercury switch, I also seen same method in professional pedometer see also attachment for more info how to build your own pedometer.

Hello,

You can search the analog.com site for "pedometer". It will show you the AN-602 that explains a pedometer application using the acceleration sensor ADXL202. Including the theory.

Hope this helps.
