Poke around on the EDAboard as there are lots of codes available. You may also want to look at ToyFDTD. I think that has a PML.
The PML should work reasonably well. If it isn't, you likely have something wrong with your code. How "thick" is your PML. Try using at least 10 to 20 grid cells.
